Education He studied as a priest at Avignon and began his career as a tutor in Lyon, before leaving for Paris and choosing a literary career.
Career He contributedfor a while to the Mercure de France. In 1784, his Discours sur l'universalité de la langue française was rewarded by the Académie royale des sciences de Prusse.
Financial Situation Born in a poor family, he was a "bourgeois d'esprit". In Paris, he was known as "le chevalier de Parcieux", then as "le comte Rivarol" (false nobility). He was able to make a living thanks to his literary talent.
