Career

Vestrini was a cleric regular of the religious order of the Scolopi or Piarists, whose main aim was teaching and educating the youth.

From the title pages of his publications, we can deduce that Vestrini was a professor of moral philosophy and theology at the Cortona seminary, in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, before becoming a lecturer in theology at the Collegio Nazareno in Rome.

Vestrini also gave lectures at the Accademia Etrusca in Cortona, of which he was a distinguished member. In 1753 he was elected as part of the committee aimed to reform the rules of the Accademia, and contributed to writing the Obblighi degli Accademici (1754).

In 1754, Vestrini was asked to write the sepulchral elegy for the bishop of Cortona Luigi Gherardi.

Vestrini's only known translation is Fontenelle's Entrentiens sur la pluralité des mondes.

When compared with the Italian edition of 1748, falsely showing 'Paris' as the place of publication, Vestrini's is the first translation into Italian to contain all of the original additions Fontenelle included in the last version of his text (see translation works).

    In the printer's preface, it is confirmed that Vestrini decided to use the fourth edition of the text, so that he could add the histoire des abeilles to the third evening.

    This translation was originally prompted by Vestrini at the kind request of the Cortona noblewoman Teresa Tommasi Vagnucci to satisfy her curiosity, but was not meant to be circulated.

    The preface from the publisher Michele Bellotti accordingly downplays Fontenelle's "graziosa Operetta" in order to avoid censorship. Not unlike Fontenelle's original warnings, Bellotti stresses that the author should be considered "come Poeta che finge, non come Filosofo che argomenta".
