translations activities
D'Estouteville's tentative activities as a translator were pursued away from the canons of Paris' literary cirlces and salons.
His manuscript of Dante's Divine Comedy did however reach Montesquieu, who went through the painful experience of listening to a reading of it by D'Estouteville in 1749. Possibly to improve the translation, Montesquieu interceded to ask his friend Ottaviano Guasco to review D'Estouteville's version.

With the collaboration of Fréron, D'Estouteville published "cette bagatelle", which he defines as an imitation of the eighth canto of Marino's L'Adone, called Trastulli. The adaptation includes translated parts, additions from the translators and changes designed for a French taste.
The same text was republished in 1775 under the title Adonis in Paris, and was then translated in German in 1752.

- Note:
D'Estouteville's constitutes the first integral translation of the Divine Comedy in French. It circulated in a manuscript form since its completion in 1751, although there exist three different versions of it.
The main aim of D'Estouteville's version was to adapt the Commedia to the canon of the French religious prose of his times, through cuts, reinterpretations and adaptations.
The translation was eventually published during the French Revolution by Sallior, who included Isaac Bullart's Vie de Dante D'Aligère (1682) and the analytical comments of Prévost d'Exmes in his edition.
In the preface, Sallior undelrines the pioneering nature of the work, especially in relation to the Paradiso, observing that "cette traduction est, pour ainsi dire, la préface d'une traduction plus digne de l'originale".
