Franz was son to the well-known professor of history Dietrich Hermann Hegewisch, who also published works on British and Irish history. He went to school in Kiel and Eutin before he studied medicine in Kiel, Göttingen and Würzburg. After graduating as a doctor of medicine in 1805, he travelled to Vienna, Paris and London.

Career

After a few years as a family physician, Franz Hegewisch became professor of medicine in Kiel in 1809 but remained active as a doctor, too. Later, he was awarded the title of Danish privy councillor.
Financial Situation

Given the above, we may assume Hegewisch's financial situation to have been fairly comfortable. Surely he did not rely on income from his translation activities.
