Lavirotte possibly studied medicine in Montpellier before completing his education in Paris.
Career

Lavirotte practised medicine in Paris, probably from 1748, and eventually became docteur régent of the university. In 1757, he joined the army of Westphalia. From the following year he worked at the Hôpital de la Charité.

From 1751 and at least until 1754, Lavirotte was one of the eighteen royal censors assigned to natural history, medicine and chemistry, a role which led him to read many of the latest publications on these topics.

From 1750, he was one of the authors of the Journal des sçavans, and later composed the Encyclopédie entry DOCTEUR EN MÉDECINE. In the same year, he became corresponding member of the Académie of Dijon.
