In his retirement, Jefferson corresponded with the French writer Antoine Louis Claude Destutt de Tracy, edited his Treatise on Political Economy, and translated his Commentary and Review of Montesquieu’s Spirit of Laws into English. The latter work was published in the US before it was published in France in its original language.
